Keeping Our Young People Safe
Each year, 400,000 students flock to Metro Boston to attend one of its 80 colleges or universities (where nearly half the state’s population has obtained at least an associate degree). In addition, one million students attend public school at one of the nearly 2,000 schools throughout the commonwealth. To say there are a lot of schools in Massachusetts would be an understatement.
School buildings house our state’s most precious goods – our youth – so the pest control practices that affect them are overseen by the Children and Families Protection Act, which went into effect in November 1, 2000.
The purpose of the Children and Families Protection Act -333 CMR 14.00 is to “promote the implementation of Integrated Pest Management techniques and to establish those standards, requirements, and procedures necessary to minimize the risk of unreasonable adverse effects on human health and the environment regarding the use of pesticides within a school, daycare center, or school-age child care program facility.”
